Carol helped catch my two older children, born in Vermont. My wife at the time had chosen her midwife before she chose the father if her children!
Carol was a beautiful soul. She was one of those soft-spoken women whose demeanor belied her the strength she had within.
For some reason, I remember the first time we met. My wife took me to meet her. She was an aspiring midwife for whom Carol was a hero(ine). I don’t remember why, but Carol told us of a time when this guy came over to her home when she lived in California, looking for one of her housemates when Carol was there by herself. He talked a lot, and took out his guitar and played her a few of his songs. She told us that she was not impressed with his music at all. She then told us she later found out he was Stephen Stills. Go figure.
A little over 20 years ago I was at an income tax conference and was sitting next to this woman, and while waiting for the first speaker to start, I found out that she was from North Carolina but was recently in Vermont. Since I had lived there myself, I asked where in Vermont, and she told me she had been in Lincoln. I told her the only person. I knew in Lincoln was Carol Warnock. Her eyes grew wide, and her lip started to quiver. I started to wonder what was wrong until she blurred out, “That’s my Aunt!!!!” Small world.
Carol and I kept in touch on Facebook into this century. My wife of 25 years now and I were visiting my daughter and some friends who still lived in Vermont about 10-15 years ago. We found ourselves in Bristol and had tried to find a time to catch up with Carol, but the timing didn’t work. Our loss then.
Our loss now.
May her memory be a blessing.
