I first met Carol in 1989 when I started teaching in Lincoln. It was Molly and Oakley (and their parents) who introduced me to her. My first thought was, “If I ever get pregnant, I want her to be there”. Fast forward to 1999. I was married, pregnant, and living on an island 30 miles out to sea. Carol was my second phone call after my mom. I wanted her to be my midwife. The thing is- she remembered me after all those years. She told me she would, but I’d have to come back and live in Vermont for the last month. That was not doable. She knew the midwife on the island- they met at Casa. Carol assured me that I’d be in good hands, and she would follow my pregnancy from afar. She was my guiding birth midwife, who emanated so much positive reinforcement and so much love from afar.
